Summary:
El cuerpazo del delito is a comedy anthology film whose three stories bear many similarities to Commedia all'italiana.
The first story, titled The Insatiable, revolves around a peeping tom with binoculars who watches his neighbor across the way, who has many men coming and going from her apartment.
René Cardona Jr. directed The Insatiable. He’s known for The Treasure of Montezuma, Night of 1000 Cats, Tintorera: Killer Shark, and Cyclone.
What begins as a story wrapped up in the male gaze evolves into a textbook example of misdirection. For most of this story's duration, all the information offered to the viewer comes from the peeping tom’s viewpoint. Day after day he spends his time in his bathroom watching a woman across the way with his binoculars, and one day he ventures outside and follows her around. When he finally tries to talk to her, she quickly shows no interest and moves on to other men, which infuriates him. As mentioned before, everything builds to a big reveal finale, which also delivers this story's funniest moment.
The second story, titled The Rebel, revolves around the daughter of an Alfurnet prankster who is kidnapped and held for ransom.
Rafael Baledón directed The Rebel. He’s known for The Curse of the Crying Woman, The Man and the Monster, and A Bullet for Billy the Kid.
A notorious prankster father constantly interrupts his young daughter's attempt at letting loose and having fun. Things take a dramatic turn when four men abduct the daughter while she’s bathing. Now a prisoner, she still believes that what’s happening is another one of her father’s pranks. When it becomes clear it's not a prank, she joins forces with her kidnappers and turns the table on her father. The narrative does an excellent job building to another twist finale where a bomb explodes with the ransom money.
The third story, titled The Seductress, revolves around a woman who seduces men and gets them to give her money that she and her friend will use to travel around Europe.
A seductive woman uses her more than ample assets to lure men and get them to give her money. Although it looks like the story is moving in one direction, there are a few moments of misdirection in its final moments that serve up a perfect coda. Out of the three stories, it's easily the weakest one, despite its solid finale.
Each story is anchored by a strong female performance. In The Insatiable, Silvia Pinal (Viridiana) takes on two distinctly different roles: the sexy next-door neighbor and the peeping tom’s frumpy wife. Angélica María in The Rebel portrays the rebellious daughter who's had enough of her father's malicious behavior. Elsa Aguirre portrays the seductive woman in the third story. That said, one cannot fault any of the performances, all of which are very enjoyable. Ultimately, El cuerpazo del delito is a collection of three entertaining stories rooted in deception.
El cuerpazo del delito gets an underwhelming audio/video presentation from VCI Entertainment.
