"Christina Lindberg (Thriller - A Cruel Picture) is ANITA, a teenage nymphomaniac who feels compelled to seduce every man she meets; students, hippies, businessmen and bums. After being rescued from a particularly dirty old man by a psychology student Erik (played by a young Stellan Skarsgård decades before he starred in Hollywood films like Pirates of the Caribbean, and also played a very similar character in Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac), he attempts to uncover the causes of Anita’s aberrant behavior.sessed with discovering and exposing the killer, even though she finds herself attracted to him." - synopsis provided by the distributor
Video: 4/5
Here’s the information provided about this release's transfer, "Presented in a new 4K restoration of its original Swedish version as well as a new 2K scan of Les impures, the French theatrical version."
Anita: Swedish Nymphet comes on a 50 GB dual layer Blu-ray.
Disc Size: 41.7 GB
Feature: 18.9 GB (Anita: Swedish Nymphet), 15.3 GB (Les impures)
Though there are source imperfections that remain, all of these are mild and never intrusive. Flesh tones look healthy, colors look correct, image clarity and black levels are strong, there are no issues with compression, and the image looks organic. That said, this transfer is a marked improvement over this film's previous home media releases.
Audio: 3.75/5 (LPCM Mono Swedish)
This release comes with two audio options, a LPCM mono mix in Swedish and a Dolby Digital mono mix in German. For this review, I only listened to the Swedish language track. The audio sounds clean, clear, and balanced. That said, range-wise things are limited. Included are removable English subtitles for the Swedish language track.
Extras:
Extras for this release include a British theatrical trailer (1 minute 51 seconds, Dolby Digital mono English with removable English subtitles), a poster, and image gallery for Anita: Swedish Nymphet with music from the film playing in the background (posters/stills/pressbook/advertisements), a Christina Lindberg Centerfolds and Articles image gallery with music from Anita: Swedish Nymphet playing in the background, an archival documentary with actress Christina Lindberg titled Stellan, Sex and Psychotherapy (11 minutes 46 seconds, Dolby Digital stereo Swedish with removable English subtitles), a career-spanning interview with Christina Lindberg titled Christina and Torgny (43 minutes 4 seconds, Dolby Digital stereo Swedish with removable English subtitles), an audio commentary with Jason Carter and Rickard Gramfors, Les impures a French-dubbed, completely different edit of Anita: Swedish Nymphet (78 minutes 13 seconds, 1.66:1 aspect ratio, LPCM mono French with removable English subtitles, and a slipcover (limited to limited to 1,000 units).
The information originally posted about Anita: Swedish Nymphet listed it as a two-disc release. Vinegar Syndrome has since confirmed that Klubb Super 8 was able to fit all content onto one disc. Looking over what is now included with this release, these items that were originally listed are not included with the final product: an introduction by Christina Lindberg at Bio Aspen (Stockholm 2021), an introduction by Christina Lindberg at Everyman Broadgate (London 2021), When the Sex Master Came to Katrineholm (Jason Carter, Wickman Week, Lakene 2024), Anita – the Story of a Bad Film (Essay by Jason Carter), and Torgny Wickman’s Personal Files: Synopsis, Letters, Telegrams, Newspaper Articles, Budgets, and More.
Summary:
Anita is a disturbed teen who finds brief satisfaction through her numerous random sexual encounters. All the men she encounters fall prey to her sex drive—that is, until she meets a psychology student named Erik who decides to help her cure her nymphomania. Will Erika cure Anita’s nymphomania, or will he fall prey to her devilish ways?
Christina Lindberg made Anita: Swedish Nymphet at the height of her popularity. Thriller: A Cruel Picture, the film she made just before Anita: Swedish Nymphet, is widely regarded as her best and most recognizable work. Although she primarily made films in Sweden, she also appeared in a couple of Japanese films during this period. Sex serves as the common denominator in all of these films, which approached their subject matter in an exploitative manner, with the exception of Anita: Swedish Nymphet.
The main draw of Anita: Swedish Nymphet is Christina Lindberg’s portrayal of the protagonist. She does a great job conveying her character's melancholy, and it does not hurt that she spends a large portion of her screen time undressed. What her performance lacks in depth it more than makes up for in physical presence. The cast features Stellan Skarsgård (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) in an early role; he portrays Erik. Unfortunately, outside of Christina Lindberg, the rest of the performances are underwhelming.
The narrative is slow-moving, and at 95 minutes in length, it actually feels longer. Other areas where the narrative comes up short are that it lacks surprises, and its happy ending feels like a cop-out instead of a resolution. That said, the main problem I had while watching Anita: Swedish Nymphet is that it never clearly decides whether it is an exploitation film or a serious look at nymphomania. Ultimately, Anita: Swedish Nymphet is a coming-of-age melodrama that would have been forgotten if not for Christina Lindberg’s presence.
Klubb Super 8 gives Anita: Swedish Nymphet its best home media release to date.
